Macadamia nut officially known as Australian nut, is a tall evergreen tree belonging to the genus Macadamia in the field of mountain dragon ophthalmology. This plant is native to the coastal subtropical rainforests of Queensland and New South Wales in Australia, and is mainly distributed in Oceania and Southeast Asia. In China, macadamia nuts are mainly planted in Yunnan, Hainan, Guangdong, and Taiwan. The Hawaiian nut is suitable for growing in fertile and well drained acidic soil, but its root system is shallow and not suitable for growing in areas with strong winds. ‌
Macadamia nut is rich in essential nutrients for the human body and has high nutritional value, earning it the title of “King of Nuts”. Its kernels are sweet and have a unique creamy aroma, with a high oil content. The fat content of the kernels is 75% -79%, making it an ideal woody edible oil material. It can also be used to make soap, shampoo, etc. In addition, macadamia nuts are not only delicious snacks, but also have various health benefits. The research shows that the oil can effectively reduce blood pressure, regulate and control blood sugar level, improve lipid metabolism, and have significant effects on preventing heart disease, reducing blood viscosity, and preventing atherosclerosis. Long term consumption of macadamia nut oil can maintain blood lipids in a healthy state, protect the cardiovascular system, prevent thrombosis, and control blood pressure. The oil is also rich in antioxidants and trace elements, which can help prevent tumors and cancers, especially breast cancer and gastrointestinal cancer.
In addition to its nutritional and health value, the macadamia nut is also an ornamental tree, and its evergreen nature makes it a popular species in ecological greening. However, the Hawaiian nut also faces threats of habitat loss and fragmentation, as well as the impact of human activities, resulting in its inclusion in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, with a protection level of Vulnerable (VU). In 1994, Macadamia nut were protected in at least four protected areas in southeastern Queensland, Australia.
